Instructor Rating

To be able to work as an instructor, you need to obtain an instructor rating. The pre-requisite for  this rating is a CPL and a NVFR or IFR.Training is conducted to meet all requirements as set out in the appropriate CAR's and CAO's for  this rating.
Flight Instructor (Aeroplane) Rating, Grade III (CAO 40.1.7)
Requirements for issue of rating are:
>Applicant must hold either a Commercial or Air Transport Pilot License.
>Applicant must hold an Aeroplane Night VFR rating or a Command Instrument Rating. >Complete a course of instruction in instructional Principles and Methods of at least 12    classroom hours.
> Complete a course of flight instruction of not less than 50 hours flight time. Of this, at least    30 hours shall be dual instruction, with a Grade I flight instructor.

Private Pilot

The remaining 20 hours shall be flown as follows:

as mutual practice with another trainee instructor; or as practice instruction with a flight instructor acting as a student pilot. This instructor shall not have conducted the initial training in the sequence being practised.

Instructor Rating Theory

During the period of the course, areas of theoretical knowledge covered include:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Engines & Systems
  • Air Law
  • Aeroplane Performance
  • Navigation
  • Meteorology
  • Principles & Methods of Instruction (PMI)

This theoretical knowledge, along with practical flight experience is combined to assist in producing long briefings (each around 40 minutes duration), and pre-flight briefings (each around 10-15 minutes duration).Both the long and pre-flight briefings are demonstrated by the Course Instructor, and practised by each Course Member.

Course duration for Full-time courses (5 days per week) ranges from six to eight weeks, dependent on the number of Course Members.

Part-time courses are also offered with course duration dependent on the number of hours devoted to the course by each Course Member.
